Travels via mass transit, bicycle, carpool and walking in exclusion of a personal automobile since 1990—the first U.S. war in Iraq; chooses to eat from low on the food chain (vegan); resides (before, during and shortly after the Chilean Military coup d’e´tat of the democratic socialism in 1973; again since 2003) in Chile, with activist partner, Carolina Richards.

2021 Dignity Workshop 45.1: Howard Richards, Recipient of 2021 HumanDHS Lifetime Commitment Award!

He kindly recorded his acceptance speech on December 8, 2021 in Limache, Chile, for Day Two of the 18th Workshop on Transforming Humiliation and Violent Conflict at Columbia University in New York City, December 9 – 10, 2021. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this conference had to take place online.

Peace philosopher Howard Richards is one of the deepest thinkers of our time, and more — he has also put into practice what he teaches. Dr. Richards is a philosopher of social science who is now based in Chile, where he, his wife Caroline and their daughter Shelley host the Chileufu dialogue home. . With Gavin Andersson he teaches once a year “Ethics, Macroeconomics and Organizing” in the EMBA program at University of Cape Town. With Gavin (who pioneered the unbounded idea) and others he co-founded the Unbounded Academy. It develops dignified and dignifying solutions for our currently unsustainable institutional structures and systems. His focus is philosophical and scientific support for an ethic of care. He holds the title of Research Professor of Philosophy at Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana, USA, a Quaker school where he taught for thirty-five years. He was the founder of the Peace and Global Studies Program there and co-founder of the Business and Nonprofit Management program.

Howard Richards is being honored with the 2020 HumanDHS Lifetime Commitment Award on Day Two of the 18th Annual Workshop on Transforming Humiliation and Violent Conflict, “Toward a New Global Normal: Dignity Through Solidarity,” co-hosted by Morton Deutsch-International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution at Teachers College, Columbia University, December 9 – 11, 2021, held online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
